A comprehensive children’s martial art or self defense program has to be both: educational, physically rewarding and above
all fun. We spit our children’s and teens martial arts program into three age groups:
- Tigers – Ages 6-8
- Dragons – Ages 9-12
- Teens – Ages 13-15
By doing this are programs can be age appropriate and directly targeted to meet both the personal and social developmental
needs of your child. Our aim is not to turn children into fighters but to teach them how to show respect for themselves
and towards others and gain a set of moral values, which they can take with them into adult life. A description of our
various children’s and teens martial arts program is detailed below.
Tigers (Martial Arts For Children Ages 6-8 in Boston)
Any child psychologist will tell you that children learn through play. When playing they exercise their imagination, learn
to adopt different roles as well as how to interact with other children. We see our programs as an extension of this play
but within a more structured environment that is supplemented with an educational aspect i.e. we teach them how to play
better.
Many children lack the vocabulary of play; that is they are unsure how to invite themselves into a game or express an
opinion or idea when playing. By creating a non-judgmental and inclusive setting for your child they have an opportunity
to explore the possibility of adopting different roles and playing in different ways. At the same time we help their
physical development by improving their balance, co-ordination, stability and general fitness level. Most of this is done through games and drills rather than the simple repetition of martial arts techniques.

Dragons (Martial Arts For Children Ages 9-12 in Boston)
Our Dragons program starts to set simple and realistic goals for your child so they can gain a sense of achievement and
self-value. At this age we start to focus more on techniques and the learning of martial arts movements. We also start to
communicate more directly the importance of respect, self-discipline and social responsibility e.g. doing the right thing
by your friends etc. We hold to traditional values and aim to educate your child as to the importance of these.
We also have specific “Awareness Months” throughout the year where we deal with issues that a child may face in their
life. This may be something around how to deal with bullying and/or what to do if you see someone being bullied (if you
would like more information on this subject please visit our website schoolbullyingboston.com) etc.
We area SEPS (Situation Effective Protection System) registered training center and all our child instructors have
completed training in the SEPS Children’s Program. SEPS isn’t a martial art as such but an educational method for
communicating ideas around personal safety.

Teenage Martial Arts Boston
It has probably never been harder to be a teenager in today’s society. The decisions that your child faces are far more
complicated that the ones we faced at a similar age. In the modern world the gap between childhood and adulthood has
closed to a degree where it is almost imperceptible. Many children see their parents as out of touch and/ignore their
advice as being irrelevant or too strict. Most children don’t resent their parent’s views but feel they are incompatible
with the life they feel they should lead.
One of our goals at Roshankish Tae Kwon Do is to provide a safe place, where the pressures of teenage life can be
forgotten. Because we are a traditional system the set of values we hold to are often seen as something outside of school
and family (even though they are the same) and therefore easier to adopt. These values become easier for a teenager to
accept when they see the instructors of our teenage program following them in their own lives – we make sure our
instructors for these programs are young themselves so they can act as positive role models.
We also use the SEPS program at this stage and introduce discussions around the issues that teens today face.
